Masks

The mask changing performance is an intriguing part of the Sichuan Opera in Chengdu, China. Performers wear masks that change instantaneously! One of the performers came to our seats in the front row, motioned for us to touch his mask, and then, as we reached up, he turned his head to the side and then forward, and, in that moment, the mask changed, from black to white!
Today is a holiday here in this country where people dress up in costumes and masks -temporary masks with which we can have fun. But, so often we hide behind masks of other sorts, perhaps for protection of self. I know that during my own journey through life I have had to work at peeling away some of these layers, to stop hiding behind roles that I thought I should play, to allow my self to be visible, to just be my self, fearlessly. Even so, I do still wear some masks at times.
