Ski tracks. Fox tracks. Otter slides. Bike tracks... Yes, I skied across the lake today whereas the fox trotted, the otter ran and slid, and some other creature, pining for spring, biked across the lake on this fine spring day!
The snow on the lakes is melting down to ice. The snow in the woods has a crust that enables the forest creatures to scamper about playfully. (This includes HMN... until a weak spot is found and she must extricate herself from the knee deep hole and carefully swim back to a stable crust.) The snow on the house roof is quickly disappearing, and sprinkles of sunflower seed shells adorn the yard. A welcome gift on this first day of spring is the gentle snowfall that gives a temporary covering to it all...
How far will you go to cast a line? These fishermen on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior claimed the ice was 8" thick and the water at most 4 feet deep.
The northeast wind pushed sheets of ice along the shore. I listened to the river of ice and watched as the ice sheets would catch, then buckle, groan, and crack. Pieces would suddenly break off, pile up, sometimes sliding backwards along the unbroken surface.
