Listen to the trees

When I woke up this morning, two deer were in the yard.  Momma was showing her young-one how to best survive the cold winter:  easy food = better chance of survival.  I think 25% of the seeds from the bird feeder fall to the ground.  The deer have learned this and make several visits throughout the day.  They usually dash into the woods when I walk down the path from the house and then quickly return to the feast once I step into the garage.

Blessings to you throughout the new year!

They're beautiful, Heidi. It's funny how differently I view deer now that I'm a hunter. I have a greater appreciation of their beauty and their ability to elude a hunter, especially a new bow hunter. ;)

the same to you, Heidi!

they are beautiful. though it doesn't seem like a few seeds from a bird feeder would provide much sustenance for a deer. :(

These deer are characters. Sometimes they dash right into the woods as soon as I step out the door - as three did this morning. Then this afternoon one stood still and looked at me as if I was a curiosity as I walked within 15 feet of it.

The bird seed itself certainly isn't enough to survive, but it must be a tasty snack for the deer. Especially when they can eat right from the feeder! Yesterday I forgot to pull the rope to raise it back to its bear-and-squirrel-proof position high above the ground (It's in the middle of the yard on a pulley system). This morning the deer were nuzzling the openings, eating right from the feeder. Oops. Poor chickadees.
